New York Approves Plan Paving Way for 7,000 Bronx Housing Units

Friday, August 16, 2024

Vivien Krieger was quoted in a CoStar News article regarding New York City’s approval of a plan to allow the development of approximately 7,000 new residential housing units in the East Bronx. The plan is part of the city’s promotion of transit-oriented developments near four East Bronx stations on the Metro-North commuter railroad: Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park, Hunts Point, and Co-op City, which are expected to open by 2027. These stations will provide direct transit access to Penn Station in Manhattan. The rezoning will aid in creating 10,000 new jobs in the East Bronx, according to the office of Mayor Eric Adams.

“The East Bronx rezoning is significant and exciting,” said Vivien. “It’s a forward-looking plan to attract developers and lenders to develop around the train stations… This is encouraging housing and economic opportunities around the train stations to help East Bronx become a regional connector… This type of opportunity is going to help draw different types of developers.”

Vivien recently chaired Urban Land Institute New York’s Technical Assistance Panel, which conducted a study for Montefiore Health System on how it can expand and reshape its campus with the opening of the Morris Park station. “The timing of the new Metro-North Station and the city’s rezoning creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Montefiore to reshape its campus and deepen its connections to the community,” said Vivien in a press release that followed the study. “Decisions made now will impact patient, employee, student, and community experiences for decades to come.”
