Ivory Bishop Appointed to the New York City Bar Association Judiciary Committee

Ivory Bishop, a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation Department, has been appointed to the New York City Bar Association’s Judiciary Committee.

Ivory is a former federal prosecutor and an experienced litigator who concentrates his practice on complex corporate and business litigation, white-collar and criminal proceedings, congressional and regulatory investigations, class actions, and contract disputes, including disputes arising in the world of combat sports.

Having recently served in the United States Department of Justice as an assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, Ivory investigated and prosecuted individual and corporate defendants for a range of offenses, including bribery, money laundering, tax crimes, theft of government property, identity theft, and fraud. He worked closely with several state and federal law enforcement agencies, including DHS, FBI, ICE, IRS, DOS, and more. His clients benefit from his thorough understanding of Department of Justice procedure, the US Attorney Manual, and criminal investigation strategies employed by the Government. As a result, clients who retain Ivory to conduct internal investigations, for example, benefit from his ability to model his investigations on how the Government would conduct its own investigations. This knowledge, combined with his knowledge of criminal law and the federal sentencing guidelines, allows Ivory to advise clients on how to structure internal policies to prevent crimes from occurring and limit liability in the event a rogue employee engages in malfeasance.

In addition to his experience as a criminal defense advisor and litigator, Ivory also represents corporate and business clients in all sorts of litigation in federal and state courts across the country. Ivory has a way of enveloping himself in the businesses and industries of his clients, gaining a depth of knowledge and experience in various sectors including but not limited to chemical manufacturing, business consulting, food safety, securities, banking, real estate development, and dietary supplements. This knowledge allows Ivory to appreciate the business implications of litigation decisions and provide his clients with zealous advocacy from an advocate that understands their business.

Ivory has also developed a knack for creatively resolving litigation matters short of trial and reducing settlements to binding agreements. Ivory has employed this contract drafting skillset in representing various parties in the combat sports industry, drafting and negotiating contracts on behalf of boxers, mixed martial arts fighters, fighting equipment manufacturers and retailers, dietary supplement companies, sponsors, and boxing organizations.

Ivory is a thought leader in the world of combat sports, advocating for uniformity in health and safety standards within the fractured sport of boxing.

Ivory has represented the likes of the legendary undisputed champion, Roy Jones, Jr., former undisputed supermiddleweight champion/current WBC female supermiddleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn, young male and female boxing prospects and future world champions.  On behalf of his fighters, Ivory has negotiated sponsorship contracts, management and promotion deals, and fight contracts while ensuring that every entity to which his fighters attach themselves aligns with that fighter’s ethics and character standards.

Related to combat sports, Ivory has also advised parties regarding sports gambling statutes and regulations, crafting use agreements that limit the liability of sportsbooks, and representing clients sued as a result of conduct that negatively affected sports betting.

Ivory previously served as a federal judicial law clerk for the Honorable Theodore McKee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia and the late-great-Honorable Sterling Johnson, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.

Ivory earned his J.D., cum laude, from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, where he was the managing editor of articles for Hofstra's Labor & Employment Law Journal. He earned his B.A. from Five Towns College. Outside of his professional life, Ivory is passionate about boxing, mixed martial arts, fitness, mentorship, and ministry. He is also active in the community, serving as a board member of a non-profit organization and serving on the New York City Bar Association’s Judiciary Committee, which evaluates candidates for election, reelection, appointment, reappointment, designation, and certification to judicial office and other offices connected with the administration of justice in both the state and federal courts in New York City.
