Cozen O’Connor Adds Restructuring and Distressed M&A Lawyer Trevor Hoffmann to its New York City Office

Monday, September 16, 2024

NEW YORK, September 16, 2024 — With bankruptcy filings on the upswing for the third consecutive year, Cozen O’Connor today announced veteran corporate restructuring professional Trevor Hoffmann has joined its Bankruptcy, Insolvency & Restructuring Practice in New York City. Hoffmann, who joins the firm as a member, brings more than 25 years’ experience handling corporate bankruptcy, restructuring, and healthy and distressed M&A and real estate cases, both on the transactional and litigation sides. He comes to Cozen O’Connor from Goulston & Storrs.

Hoffmann trained as a Canadian lawyer before moving to New York City in 2001. Since that time, he has advised client on complex, high-profile domestic and international cross-border insolvency cases, including Finova Group, Adelphia Communications, Innkeepers USA, the Chicago Spire project, commodity futures broker MF Global, Sabine Oil & Gas Corporation, Hanjin Shipping Co. Ltd, and U.S. retailing icon Sears.

He is also the 14th legal professional to take up residence in Cozen O’Connor’s fast-growing New York City office in the past nine months, including business litigators Alexander I. Cohen and Michael A. Fernandez, real estate attorney Jennifer Nellany, labor and employment attorney Sandi F. Dubin and Cozen O’Conner Public Strategies’ Senior Principal Meenakshi Srinivasan.

“Bankruptcy is unique from other practice areas because it combines transactional and litigation practices. Attorneys must design complicated contracts as readily as they make oral arguments,” said Mark E. Felger co-chair of the firm’s Bankruptcy, Insolvency & Restructuring practice. “Trevor’s in-depth practice includes representing clients in bankruptcy courts throughout the United States. He’s an important addition to our group and I’m thrilled to welcome him aboard.”

Recognized by Best Lawyers in America® (2021-2025) and LawDragon 500 (2023, 2024) for his work in Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization, Hoffmann’s clients include companies, acquirers, equity holders, family offices, lenders, and hedge fund, real estate and private equity investors in all phases of restructuring.

“Clients view Trevor as a trusted business adviser, one who provides them with aggressive and innovative solutions,” said Geoffrey D. Ferrer, co-vice chair of the firm’s Transportation & Trade Group and managing partner of the New York office. “As a bankruptcy attorney, he moves easily between the courtroom and the conference room, negotiating consensual deals and litigating, as the situation may require. He’s a solid addition to the firm and I’m excited to welcome him to the New York office.”

A current member of the Turnaround Management Association, as well as the Federal Bar Council’s Bankruptcy Litigation Committee, Hoffmann advises on everything from financial restructuring and workouts to distressed M&A and real estate transactions, avoidance actions, distressed debt, reorganization plans and section 363 auctions.

“I joined Cozen O’Connor because of its high-quality, international corporate and bankruptcy and restructuring practices. Coming here provides me with the opportunity to combine my distressed M&A practice with the firm’s well-regarded U.S. and cross-border restructuring and corporate platforms,” Hoffmann said. “Having worked on numerous deals — both across from and alongside — Mark Felger, Steven Weisz, Brian Shaw, and Erik Schmidt, I jumped at the opportunity to join them at Cozen O’Connor. I’m also excited at the prospect of working with our real estate lawyers nationwide to expand my real estate workout practice.”

Hoffmann earned his LL.B at the University of Toronto and his B.Comm. at the University of Alberta.
